A pool renovation is rarely one job. It is a stack of them: shell, finish, coping, waterline tile, and the deck around it.

What a pool renovation actually includes

Most people call about the one thing they can see. Usually it is attached to two things they cannot. Here is what sits inside a full pool remodel, and how we think about each piece.

Interior finish

Plaster, quartz, or pebble. It is the layer you feel underfoot and the one that gives out first. Which product makes sense depends on your water, your budget, and how long you plan to keep the pool. How resurfacing works.

Coping

The cap where the shell meets the deck. Once coping lifts or the mortar joint opens, water gets behind it and a Connecticut winter does the rest. Signs coping needs replacing.

Waterline tile

The band at the waterline takes the worst of the chemistry and the ice. Loose tile is usually a bond problem underneath rather than a tile problem. More on tile replacement.

Structural repair

Cracks get triaged before anything cosmetic goes over them. A crack that moves is a different job from a crack that is only ugly. How to tell the difference.

Deck and patio

The slab around the pool is its own trade. It can be resurfaced, repaired, or replaced without touching the pool itself. What works on deck cracks.

Equipment and circulation

Pumps, filters, heaters, and the plumbing between them. Worth reviewing while the pool is already down, because access is never cheaper than it is right now.

Do you need a pool remodel, or just a repair?

These get treated as one conversation and they are not. A repair fixes the thing that broke. A remodel resets the clock on the whole pool.

If the shell is sound and the finish still has years left, a targeted repair is the honest answer, and it is the one we will give you. If you are resurfacing anyway, doing coping and tile in the same visit costs less than three separate ones, because the drain-down and the setup only happen once.

The first question we ask is simple: how much longer do you want this pool, and what is actually failing? That usually decides it. Remodel or replace, compared.

How a pool remodel runs, start to finish

1. Inspection and scope

We look at the shell, finish, coping, tile, deck, and equipment, then tell you what is failing, what is aging, and what is fine as it is.

2. Written scope and quote

Line by line, so you can see every piece and drop any of them without renegotiating the whole job.

3. Drain and demo

The pool comes down to the surfaces being replaced. Hidden problems surface here, and we call you before proceeding on anything we did not quote.

4. Structure, then finish

Structural work first, always. Coping and tile set next. The interior finish goes on last so nothing lands on top of a problem.

5. Fill, start up, hand off

A new finish needs its start-up handled properly. We walk you through what to do, and what to avoid, through the first month.

How long it takes

Scope and Connecticut weather set the calendar, not a template. Here is the timeline broken down job by job.

What moves the price of a swimming pool remodel

We are not going to publish a number that pretends every pool is the same. What we can tell you is what actually moves a quote up or down.

Size and shape. Perimeter drives coping and tile. Surface area drives the finish.
Which finish you pick. Plaster, quartz, and pebble are not close on price or on lifespan.
What the structure needs. This is the one that changes quotes mid-project when nobody looked first. We look first.
Access. A backyard a truck can reach costs less to work in than one it cannot.
How much you bundle. Coping, tile, and finish together cost less than the same three jobs in three seasons.
When you book. Fall and winter scheduling beats a spring rush.

Ask for a written scope and you will get the number for your pool, not a range that fits nobody. Design options broken out by budget.

Pool renovation questions we get asked

How long does a pool renovation take?

It depends on how much of the stack you are replacing. Resurfacing alone moves faster than resurfacing plus coping, tile, and deck work, and structural repair adds time on top of that. Connecticut weather sets the real calendar more than the scope does. We break remodel timelines down job by job here.

Should I remodel my pool or replace it?

Almost always remodel. A sound gunite shell is worth keeping, and tearing one out turns a construction project into a demolition project first. Replacement earns its keep when the structure itself has failed, or when the pool sits in the wrong part of the yard for how you actually use it. We compare the two here.

How often does a gunite pool need resurfacing?

Chemistry does more damage than age, so two pools the same age can be years apart. The finish you chose matters too, since plaster, quartz, and pebble do not wear at the same rate. Here are the signs to watch for, and how the three finishes compare.

Do I have to replace the coping and tile when I resurface?

No. But it is the cheapest time to do it, because the pool is already drained and staged. Doing coping two years later means draining the pool again for the same access you already paid for. If your coping is sound, we will tell you to leave it alone. More on what coping does.

Do you renovate vinyl or fiberglass pools?

When should I book a pool renovation in Connecticut?

Earlier than most people do. Fall and winter are the easiest times to get on a schedule, and booking then usually means the pool is ready at the start of the season instead of partway through it. Spring callers often wait.
