Shotcrete vs gunite: what is the difference (and does it matter)?
Shotcrete and gunite are the same idea: concrete sprayed at high velocity over a cage of steel to build a pool shell in place. The difference is when the water joins the party. Gunite is mixed dry and gets its water at the nozzle. Shotcrete arrives in the truck already wet. That is the entire distinction, and for your pool it matters less than who is holding the hose.

How each one works
Both methods start the same way: a dug hole, plumbing runs, and a grid of steel rebar bent into the shape of the pool. Then concrete gets sprayed over that steel at high velocity, compacting as it hits, and carved smooth by hand before it cures. The spraying is what makes a monolithic shell possible, with no seams and no forms.
Gunite: the dry-mix method
Sand and cement travel through the hose dry. Water joins at the nozzle, where the operator adjusts the mix moment to moment. A skilled nozzleman can tune the material for walls, floors, and tight corners as he goes.
Shotcrete: the wet-mix method
The concrete arrives in a ready-mix truck, already batched with water at the plant, and gets pumped through the hose as-is. What you lose in nozzle control you gain in batch consistency; every yard is the same recipe.

What your shell actually cares about
If you own the pool for thirty years, here is what will have mattered: whether the steel was placed and tied correctly, whether the concrete was compacted without voids, whether it cured properly, and whether water was managed around the shell every winter since. Not one of those is decided by the word gunite or shotcrete.
That is why everything downstream is interchangeable. The plaster, quartz, or pebble finish bonds the same. Waterline tile and coping install the same. Structural repairs, when they come decades later, are diagnosed and fixed the same way. A renovation contractor working on your shell will care about its condition, not its birth certificate.

When proposals land, one may say gunite and another shotcrete, and the price gap will tempt you to treat the words as grades of quality. Do not. Ask each builder the same four questions instead: how thick is the shell and where, what psi is the mix designed for, how is the rebar scheduled at the stress points like steps and the skimmer, and who has been running their nozzle and for how long. Strong answers to those four beat either label.
One more Connecticut-specific note: freeze-thaw does not care which method built your shell. It attacks open joints, failed caulk, and water trapped behind tile, all of which are maintenance realities, not method outcomes.
